Our public relations policy is based on attraction rather than promotion; we need always maintain personal anonymity at the level of press, radio, films, television, and other public media of communication.
Tradition Eleven, The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Overeaters Anonymous
Our mission is to educate the public as to the existence of Overeaters Anonymous in southern Alberta with the hope that we may attract compulsive overeaters who still suffer. Through the twelve steps we have been offered a way out of the loneliness of food obsession. We would like nothing better than to share the physical, emotional and spiritual recovery we each have found with the newcomer. We cannot keep the recovery we have found in Overeaters Anonymous unless we give it away.
The activities of the Public Information Committee of Southern Alberta Intergroup are governed by the principle of anonymity. We wish to attract the attention of the public not through our personalities but rather by the principles by which we live. These principles are best expressed through our personal stories of recovery: What we were like before we were members of Overeaters Anonymous, what brought us here and how we have changed as the result of working the twelve steps. Anonymity means that we do not use our full names when in contact with members of the public nor do we allow our faces to be shown via any public media of communication.
Some ways in which we carry the message to the community include Professional Outreach pamphlet packages, providing high schools and community groups with speakers to inform students and the public about Overeaters Anonymous, and hosting education booths at Health and Wellness fairs to name a few.
